- As some of you might have heard, last year it came to light that major carriers in the US have been selling user location data to third-party companies. The carriers have since said that they have ceased those practices, but apparently that isn’t enough for the FCC who are now proposing a token fine to the carriers involved.…
Why token fine, you ask? According to the FCC’s proposal, they want to hit these carriers with a fine of over $200 million, which considering how much the carriers make, feels like a pittance. However, we suppose at the very least it will act as a warning to other companies who might still be engaging in such practices, or who might be thinking about it.
According to FCC Chairman Ajit Pai, “American consumers take their wireless phones with them wherever they go. And information about a wireless customer’s location is highly
In late spring of 2012, climactic chaos descended upon the Midwest and Great Plains in the midst of the growing season. A drought is supposed to unfold on a timeline of seasons to years, but in the two weeks between June 12 and 26, the High Plains went from what a monitoring group called “abnormally dry” to “severe drought.” The affected area ballooned from covering 30 percent of the continental US in May to over 60 percent by August, with the agricultural losses tallying in the tens of billions of dollars.
The region had crashed into a “flash” drought—think of it like a flash flood, only far bigger and therefore far more consequential. It’s a phenomenon science is just beginning to understand, let alone predict. But today in the journal Nature Climate Change, two dozen researchers—atmospheric scientists, computer scientists, climate scientists, and more—are publishing a perspective piece trying
The durian might be the stinkiest fruit around but it has a special power.
It can charge your phone at lightning fast speeds, according to scientists.
According to researchers from the University of Sydney, the durian and its cousin, the jackfruit, has qualities that allow them to store huge amounts of energy.
Vincent Gomes and his team discovered that the gut of both fruits can be transformed into supercapacitors.
Inside a supercapacitor are two plates that are separate within it that are made out of metal.
These plates are coated with substances such as charcoal and electrode material that can be used to charge objects.
The largest private automaker in China is getting into the satellite business. Chinese automotive giant Geely has broadened its reach to include everything from trucking, to high-speed trains, to passenger drones, to Volvo over the last decade or so. But its newest effort could tie those things all together, as Geely just announced it’s going to build its own satellite network to enable what it calls a “smart three-dimensional mobility ecosystem.”
Geely announced late Monday that it will erect a satellite production facility and testing center in the port city of Taizhou in the Zhejiang province that the Chinese giant calls home. The facility will be capable of building a “variety of different satellite models,” some of which may be for non-Geely entities.
Geely says it will start launching the satellite network as soon as the end of this year, but did not say how big it
