• Facebook Acquires GIF Platform GIPHY

There are many GIFs available for download on the internet, but one of the largest repositories would be GIPHY, and now it looks like Facebook owns them. In an announcement on its blog, Facebook has revealed that they have acquired GIPHY, but stopped short of disclosing how much they paid for the company.

According to the company, “GIPHY, a leader in visual expression and creation, is joining the Facebook company today as part of the Instagram team. GIPHY makes everyday conversations more entertaining, and so we plan to further integrate their GIF library into Instagram and our other apps so that people can find just the right way to express themselves.”

If you’ve ever used a Facebook service like WhatsApp or Messenger to send GIFs, then chances are you’ve already used GIPHY. Facebook notes that GIPHY will continue operating as is for now, but the company is expected to further

  • Space Photos of the Week: Cassini’s Curtain Call

In 1997, NASA launched a spacecraft to Saturn. This intrepid explorer, called Cassini, spent the better part of 13 years orbiting Saturn and studying it and the planet’s many moons. The craft not only found odd-shaped storms in Saturn’s atmosphere, it also discovered new small moons around Saturn, observed geysers of water shooting out from a small moon called Enceladus, and identified material like carbon, methane, ethane, and nitrogen in the atmosphere of Saturn’s largest moon, Titan.

As time passed, the team realized the spacecraft was running low on fuel and decided its last year in orbit around Saturn would be a doozy. They knew the craft would crash into the planet at the end anyway, so the team took risks, sending Cassini swooping through the rings of Saturn, flying out by the moons and speeding back in. These grand final orbits made for some spectacular photos. In honor of

  • Microsoft’s Surface Duo Smartphone’s Specs Are A Bit Disappointing

Back in 2019, Microsoft announced the Surface Duo. It was a rather exciting announcement given that we have been hearing rumors about a Surface branded smartphone for the longest time ever. The phone was scheduled for a 2020 launch, and it looks like that will still happen, albeit with some bad news to accompany it.

When the phone was announced in 2019, it was said that it would be packing Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 855 chipset which was the flagship chipset at that time. Now that we’re in 2020 and with the release of the Snapdragon 865, we would have expected that Microsoft would at least update the chipset to make it more in line with today’s standards.

However, a report from Windows Central revealed that the company will be sticking to the Snapdragon 855, which is admittedly rather disappointing. Other specs of the phone also seem a bit disappointing if

  • Nadler calls Amazon letter to Judiciary Committee ‘unacceptable’

A Friday letter from Amazon to members of Congress looking into the company’s third-party seller practices was “unacceptable,” House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerry Nadler (D-NY) tweeted Saturday.

At issue is an Amazon executive’s testimony at a hearing last July, where he said the company doesn’t access information from third-party sellers on its platform to make competing items. But the Wall Street Journal reported last month that Amazon employees regularly used information from the sellers to develop the company’s private-label products.

“Members from both parties have serious questions about Amazon’s business practices and its honesty with the Committee,” Nadler tweeted. “We will not permit stonewalling of our investigation, by Jeff Bezos or anyone.”

Amazon vice president of public policy Brian Huseman wrote in the letter that the company was “prepared to make the appropriate Amazon executive available,” to the committee, but did not mention Bezos. Huseman added that the company
