• Mad Scientists Revive 100-Million-Year-Old Microbes

    This is the strange saga of how scientists went to some of the deepest, darkest depths of the ocean, dug 250 feet down into the sediment, collected an ancient community of microbes, brought them back to a lab, and revived them. And you’re going to think: Why, in the already-horrible year of 2020, would they tempt fate like this? Well, it turns out that not only is everything OK, but that everything is in fact very, very excellent—at least far away from humanity in the deep-sea muck of the world’s oceans.

    This story begins more than 100 million years ago in the middle of what we humans now call the Pacific Ocean. Volcanic rock had formed a hard “basement” of seafloor, as geologists call it. Over this, sediment began to accumulate. But not the kind of sediment you may expect.

    In the fight against the coronavirus, every country handles things differently.

    From imposing government-mandated lockdowns and social distancing measures, to other unique methods like adopting herd immunity, everyone has their own interpretation of what’s right for their people.

    But at the end of the day, numbers prove how good or bad a COVID-19 response was.

    In the latest rankings published by the Global COVID-19 Index (GCI), Thailand has topped the list.


    In tabulating points for their scoring system, the GCI factors in the way the coronavirus was handled, as well as the country’s recovery from the crisis itself.

    Thailand was awarded a score of 82.06, cementing its position on top of the global rankings, closely-trailed by South Korea with 81.09 points on the recovery index.

    Rounding out the global top five were Latvia (80.81), Malaysia (79.37), and Taiwan (78.94).

    In 2014, Mellow, Inc. released the Mellow for $399, billing it as “the world’s first smart sous-vide machine” — one that promised to automatically weigh and then heat and cool your specified foods for a perfect slow-cooked result, even adjusting that timing mid-cook to match your changing schedule. But now, the company is taking away those smarts from existing owners unless they pay $6 a month, or $48 for an annual subscription.

    As SlashGear’s Chris Davies reports, Mellow owners were surprised to find they couldn’t cook a meal this week until they updated the app, only to discover that the app update barred them from using most of the cooker’s previously free “smart” features without paying for the new “Premium Subscription.”
