  • Those Orange Bay Area Skies and the Science of Light

The sky above San Francisco was the color of television, tuned to the president.

To be fair, I stole that punch line from Twitter, and nerd-lit snark about Donald Trump’s apparent choices in his alleged makeup won’t fix climate change and the worst North American fire season on record. Nearly 100 fires are burning across the West, driven by lightning sieges and dry wind blasting through drought-parched, beetle-eaten forest and chaparral. So far flames have consumed 3.4 million acres, including entire towns and more than 1,000 homes. But none of that explains what happened to the sky. Residents of California’s Bay Area didn’t think it was funny to wake up Wednesday morning to a sunless sky the color of the Golden Gate Bridge. Street lights didn’t turn off; the massive Sutro broadcast antenna poked through the haze like a mechatronic Eye of Sauron; and an angry-magma glow suffused everything, like

  • Three takeaways from a visit to TikTok’s new transparency center

In July, amid increasing scrutiny from the Trump administration, TikTok announced a novel effort to build trust with regulators: a physical office known as the Transparency and Accountability Center. The center would allow visitors to learn about the company’s data storage and content moderation practices, and even to inspect the algorithms that power its core recommendation engine.

“We believe all companies should disclose their algorithms, moderation policies, and data flows to regulators,” then-TikTok CEO Kevin Mayer said at the time. “We will not wait for regulation to come.”

Regulation came a few hours later. President Trump told reporters on Air Force One that he planned to ban TikTok from operating in the United States, and a few days later he did. The president set a deadline for ByteDance to sell TikTok by September 15th — that is, this coming Tuesday — and Mayer quit after fewer than

  • The Malaysian King’s daughter wants to decriminalize suicide after sharing struggles with anxiety

Decriminalizing suicide has been a hot topic in Malaysia.

In case you weren’t aware, Malaysia is one of only three Southeast Asian countries criminalizing the act. The other two being Brunei and Myanmar.

Back in August, an online petition went viral for pushing Attorney General Idrus Harun and the Malaysian House of Representatives (Dewan Rakyat) to decriminalize the act in the name of mental health awareness.

A petition by Youth Group Minds First is petitioning Malaysia to decriminalize suicide.

As of press time, the petition now has over 18,000 signatures.

In the petition, Minds First writes that an estimated 10 Malaysians died by suicide every day.

“We cannot let this go on,” the petition reads. “Decriminalizing suicide is an important step in breaking down the stigma surrounding mental health and ensuring a society where we are able to access support without fear of judgement, discrimination, or punishment.”
