When it comes to everyday clothing choice, everyone has different tastes and preferences.
Some like to keep it dark, some like it a little brighter, and some like to stay in the happy middle ground.
While the choice of clothing is up to individual preference, I’m a firm believer that white sneakers, whether trendy or not, are here to stay.
If you’re not a fan of white sneakers, perhaps of their perceived proneness to getting dirty, or their child-like appearance, read on.
Hopefully I can convince you to go out and get a pair yourself by the time you finish reading this story.
If you’re on the fence about getting your first pair of white sneakers, then hopefully this story helps you decide.
White sneakers, first and foremost, are a staple in every fashion-forward person’s closet or shoe rack. Much like their culinary counterpart, rice, white sneakers are common. They can be bought for cheap, but their prices can also be manipulated to sky-high costs, depending on variation and availability.
But at the end of the day, there’s nothing that beats a pair of crispy white sneakers. And if anything, they help make a busy life much easier too.
1. They let your entire outfit shine and show its true potential.
If you’re style conscious, you’ll know that a good pair of shoes has the ability to completely elevate an entire outfit, regardless of your gender.
When you’re wearing an eye-catching piece either on top or on the bottom, white sneakers help add a bit of balance to the attention you might grab when out and about.
Like you put thought into the outfit, without trying too hard.
2. White sneakers allow you to stop having to think about what goes and what doesn’t.
This is great, especially when you simply don’t have the time to think about the mundanities of footwear. Of course, even if you do have the time, it’s always best to go with something that gets along well with your clothing items. But with white sneakers, you just can’t go wrong, ever.
Whether you’re going out for a quick grocery run, jet-setting across the world, or you’re headed to a party with friends and co-workers, white sneakers take the cake when it comes to outfit versatility.
Essentially, white sneakers go with literally everything.
3. Most white sneakers are super affordable.
Yes, there are options out there that exceed US$1,000, and sometimes sell for even higher on the resell market, but the beauty of plain white sneakers is the absence of branding, or the lack of loud, obvious branding at least.
It means you won’t ever have to worry about visible stripes, swooshes, or anything of that nature when putting together your outfit. This also pulls more focus towards the shoe itself, instead of the brand and people’s perception of it.
The same could be said about black shoes too, but they tend to make feet look smaller than they are, which can cause disproportionate appearances in size in some people.
You can find some great deals on white sneakers at Zalora.
4. They look good even when they’re dirty.
Hear me out.
There’s nothing wrong with wanting to keep your white sneakers crispy clean. In fact, it’s a good habit to clean your sneakers every now and then whenever you do your regular spring cleaning.
But the love for dirty white sneakers is like an acquired taste. Much like sushi, you have to give it a few tries before you start to appreciate it. You’ve gotta lean into it. Eventually, you won’t ever have to worry about getting stains on your pristine white sneakers.
However, if you’re the type that enjoys keeping your shoes clean, the very act of scrubbing all that dirt and grime off can be very therapeutic as well.
5. They’re almost always the default color for sneaker collections.
This means white sneakers are some of the most common offerings you can find in sneaker stores. You most likely won’t have to go through any real effort to find a pair.
Sure, if you’re looking for a specific brand and silhouette, you might be hard pressed to find it. But if you just want to get any pair of white sneakers, it really isn’t hard to find one that suits your fashion preferences.
What matters most is the appearance of the shoe. And like other shoes, white sneakers come in all shapes and sizes, which spoils you for choice.
6. White sneakers make any outfit (and by extension, the person wearing it) look more refined.
This may be subjective, but white sneakers just make entire outfits look more well-thought out as opposed to combinations using other colors like black, blue, and more.
Perhaps it’s the simplicity of the color white; how easily it blends with other colors, including skin-tone.
There’s nothing about them that really screams for attention, but they don’t fade away into obscurity either. They’re an equal part of your general outfit, instead of a mere accessory.
Wearing sneakers of other colors can either grab too much attention, or no attention at all. This is completely your prerogative, but if you’re putting in effort in your style, you should be considering the shoes you put your feet into as well.
7. White sneakers are, and always have been, trendy as hell.
Trends come and go. But white sneakers are here to stay.
In fact, they’ve cemented their position in the fashion industry for quite some time, scoping all the way back to the late 60s and early 70s.
From superstar icons to your average joe, white sneakers were the everyday shoe that everybody had access to, regardless of financial background.
And perhaps that’s what makes them so significant today. They’ve stood the test of time, literally. That makes the white sneaker a timeless classic.
But the main take-away from this story is that white sneakers are, and always have been, a good choice.
Dare I say it, they may be the perfect choice for any outfit and occasion.
If you’re unsure about which white sneakers to get, here are a few recommendations from yours truly:
Adidas Stan Smith – The go-to tennis shoe.
They come in a variety of colors, but the most popular one seems to be the white variant with green accents.
But if you’re looking for something that’s all-white, they’ve got that too.
You can get them here.
Nike Air Force 1 – The everyday beater shoe.
They’re worn by just about everyone. While some elitists may consider that a bad thing, saying the shoe has gone ‘mainstream’, the fact that so many people love the shoe means it’s a product of great, timeless design.
They’re chunky, but can be made to look slim depending on the outfit you put together.
You can get them here.
Reebok Club C 85 – The never-gets-old shoe.
Often overlooked in the sea of white sneakers available in stores and online, the Reebok Club C 85 makes for a more-than-decent pair of kicks. The predominantly white base is coupled with accents that come in many different colors.
There are also versions with different colored bases, but it’s safe to say the white Reeboks are the best Reeboks.
Plus, they’re often lower-priced compared to the rest of the competition, which makes them even more accessible for those just getting into the white sneaker game.
You can get them here.
Vans Authentic – The original skate shoe.
First sold by the Van Doren Rubber Company back in 1966, the Vans Authentic (then known as the ’44) was the first deck shoe ever sold by the company.
Its simple construction and minimalistic design made it extremely easy to wear. And the fact that it can also be used for skating (if you’re into it, that is) also adds bonus points to the shoe’s utility.
Like with most Vans, the Authentic also sports the brand’s signature Waffle Sole for supreme grip and comfort. The true-white colorway makes the shoe pop in both bright sunlight and dimly-lit rooms.
You can get them here.
Common Projects Achilles Low – The youthful, but grown-ass man shoe.
Bear with me, the Achilles Low’s price isn’t for the faint-of-heart. Even those with deep pockets shudder when they see the price tag of these things.
But perhaps the cost is justified, considering the amount of craftsmanship and premium materials that went into the shoes themselves.
Think fancy Italian leather dress shoes, but in sneaker form. That’s the Common Projects Achilles Low.
As Highsnobiety writer Aleks Eror once said:
“When I wear a pair of Achilles Low, I feel like a grown-ass man acting my goddamn age, yet youthful at the same time.”
You can get them here. Just pretend the price has one less digit to preserve your sanity.
