• China Wants To Ban Online Services That ‘Induce Addiction’ In Kids

Have you ever gotten so engrossed in a game that you ended up spending the entire day playing it without realizing it? Software publishers and developers might consider that a success, but at the same time, these types of games or online services might actually be bad for both mental and physical health.

So much so that over in China, the country’s government has revised their laws where they want to ban online services that can “induce addiction” in users under 18. This includes things like video games, livestreaming, social media services, and so on. China isn’t outright banning the use of these services or games, but rather they want to crack down on them and make sure that companies who make these games or services have tools that will limit how much a minor can use them.

This is actually not the first time that China has introduced regulations

  • The New Science of Wildfire Prediction

Back in 2018, a research ecologist for the US Fire Service found himself suddenly on the edges of the largest fire tornado ever observed, “a whirling vortex of flame 17,000 feet tall and rotating at 143 mph, with the destructive force of an EF-3 tornado, the kind that erases entire towns in Oklahoma.” The rare phenomenon was part of the Carr Fire, which burned large swaths of land in Northern California, and behaved in dangerously anomalous ways.

So then, if a scientist who studies organisms and their relationship to the environment wasn’t able to predict what might happen in a fire, what chance does anyone else have? And are there any tools researchers can use to help determine what comes next in the fire-prone American west?

  • Repairing the iPhone 12’s ceramic-protected OLED display costs $279

Apple has announced how much it’ll charge to repair the new iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro. For the iPhone 12 Pro, the $279 screen repair price is unchanged compared to the iPhone 11 Pro last year, despite using new ceramic-hardened glass. However the $279 cost of repairing the base iPhone 12’s display has increased by $80 compared to the iPhone 11, and the cost of repairing “other damage” has increased by $50 to $449. Repair prices for the iPhone 12 Pro Max and 12 mini are yet to be announced.

For the base iPhone 12, that’s a substantial price increase compared to the $199 you’d pay to repair the iPhone 11’s screen, likely because it now has an OLED rather than an LCD display. However for the 12 Pro this $279 price is the same as what Apple’s charged for screen repairs since 2017’s iPhone X.

  • iPhone 12 Pre-Orders Appear To Have Beaten The iPhone 11

Many were understandably upset at the fact that Apple isn’t bundling accessories with its new iPhones, and the fact that the phones do not come with a 120Hz refresh rate display despite many Android competitors offering similar hardware features. However, it seems that despite the initial upset, many ended up pre-ordering the phones anyway.

According to analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, it appears that pre-orders of the iPhone 12 have managed to beat the iPhone 11 from 2019. Kuo estimates that about 1.7-2 million units were pre-ordered in the first 24 hours of them going live, a huge jump from the iPhone 11 which managed 500,000-800,000 units in the same period of time.

What’s impressive about this figure is that it only accounts for the iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro. As you might have heard, Apple is splitting the launch of its iPhone 12 series this year, with the iPhone 12

Biotechnology is a broad discipline through which biological processes, organisms, cells or mobile parts are exploited to develop new applied sciences. What’s machine?
